Blog every day in May: a challenge

I have a challenge for you, fellow bloggers. I was reluctant to issue this particular challenge because, let's face it, I wasn't sure if I could actually do it myself. Blog every day for an entire month? Specifically, a month with 31 days in it? Blog even on weekends?! Whaaa??! Elizabeth (one of my favorite bloggers!) did this back in January, and I was so impressed. I think when you force yourself to blog every day, you stop feeling so much pressure for every post to be perfect. I do that (the pressure thing) BIG TIME, and lately I've been so frustrated by the fact that I'm not enjoying the experience of blogging as much anymore. I want to get back to the basics. You know, the writing stuff. I don't know about you, but I miss my English classes in school where we were given a topic and told to run with it. Something I may have never had the motivation to write about before, but wound up really enjoying once I got started. Do you remember that? We bloggers feel a lot of pressure to write something "cool" and funny and relatable and enjoyable, and that's GREAT, but sometimes the pressure can be too much and so we don't write at all.

That's what this little challenge is all about. I am challenging you and me both to blog every single day in the month of May, and I've even come up with post topics for us. Aren't I nice? If you're anything like me, just figuring out what the crap to blog about is the hardest part. So. Will you join me?

Here are the rules:

1. There really aren't any rules. If you miss a day, you can make it up or skip it. The blog police will not come knocking.

2. I will be including a linkup option at the bottom of my post each day, so you are welcome to leave your links here for others to peruse, as well.

3. You can still post other things every day, too. I plan to do normal outfit posts, life posts, around-Austin posts, and sponsor posts just like usual.

4. I'd seriously love you if you also include the "blog every day in May" button (below) either on your sidebar or at the end of your posts, but again, the blog police will not come knocking. My main goal here is to get us all back to the basics of blogging, not to gain a million new readers (though I wouldn't mind that).

5. Here are the topics. You can be as creative and awesome or as boring and bland as you like with these. Take 'em and run with it. Use creative post titles. Interpret each "prompt" however you like. There's no wrong way to do it. Have fun.

Day 1, Wednesday: The story of your life in 250 words or less (or one paragraph... no one will be counting your words... probably)
Day 2, Thursday: Educate us on something you know alot about or are good at. Take any approach you'd like (serious and educational or funny and sarcastic)
Day 3, Friday: Things that make you uncomfortable
Day 4, Saturday: Favorite quote (from a person, from a book, etc) and why you love it
Day 5, Sunday: Publicly profess your love and devotion for one of your blogger friends. What makes them great? Why do you love them? If you don't have blogger friends, talk about a real-life friend or even a family member
Day 6, Monday: If you couldn't answer with your job, how would you answer the question, 'what do you do'?
Day 7, Tuesday: The thing(s) you're most afraid of
Day 8, Wednesday: A piece of advice you have for others. Anything at all.
Day 9, Thursday: A moment in your day (this can be just a photo or both a photo and words)
Day 10, Friday: Most embarrassing moment (s). Spill.
Day 11, Saturday: Sell yourself in 10 words or less
Day 12, Sunday: What do you miss? (a person, a thing, a place, a time of your life...)
Day 13, Monday: Issue a public apology. This can be as funny or as serious or as creative as you want it to be.
Day 14, Tuesday: Ten things that make you really happy
Day 15, Wednesday: A Day in the life (include photos from throughout your typical day - this could be "a photo an hour" if you'd like)
Day 16, Thursday: Something difficult about your "lot in life" and how you're working to overcome it
Day 17, Friday: A favorite photo of yourself and why
Day 18, Saturday: Tell a story from your childhood. Dig deep and try to be descriptive about what you remember and how you felt.
Day 19, Sunday: Five of your favorite blogs and what you love about them
Day 20, Monday: Get real. Share something you're struggling with right now.
Day 21, Tuesday: A list of links to your favorite posts in your archives
Day 22, Wednesday: Rant about something. Get up on your soapbox and tell us how you really feel. (a pet peeve, a current event, a controversial topic, something your husband or roommate or neighbor or boss does that really ticks you off)
Day 23, Thursday: Things you've learned that school won't teach you
Day 24, Friday: Your top 3 worst traits
Day 25, Saturday: Something someone told you about yourself that you'll never forget (good or bad)
Day 26, Sunday: Something you read online. Leave a link and discuss, if you'd like.
Day 27, Monday: A letter to your readers
Day 28, Tuesday: Only pictures
Day 29, Wednesday: Five songs or pieces of music that speak to you or bring back memories. Use Grooveshark or YouTube to include them in the post
Day 30, Thursday: React to this term: Letting Go
Day 31, Friday: A vivid memory

Will you join me NEXT WEDNESDAY, May 1st, to BLOG EVERY DAY IN MAY?! We can do this!

  1. Such a fun idea! I love it! :) Sometimes we as bloggers forget to write about ourselves. Our struggles. Random fun things. We get caught up in thinking we have to write long in depth posts. This is such a great idea to get back to the basics like you said :)

  2. oh my gosh, love this! i'm having a little writer's block lately, so i may have to take you up on this! :)

  3. I love the idea of getting back to basics - and your topic ideas look like such fun! I need to shake things up a little bit, so I just might have to do this!

  4. Jenni, you could not have posted this at a better time. I have been feeling like I need to get back to the basics too, and remember why I love blogging (I still love it, but I don't feel the love every day like I used to). I do SO well with prompts, and yours are all really great! I am excited. I am especially excited that the blogging police will go easy on me. Because I do plan on breaking the rules a little bit. :) I can't wait to start!

    Thanks!

  20. This is SUCH a great and fun idea. I'd love to join you on this mission. I might have to do some catching up posts (because I will be on my honeymoon until the 5th), but I love the topics and the fact that you're giving me something to write about!!! I'll take it.

  21. This looks awesome.. I tried to blog every day in April but my job got too demanding so I haven't managed it. However, it definitely has helped me start blogging again - I was in such a funk before but am enjoying it again now. I won't take part (I have another hectic month ahead of me - marketing never stops) but look forward to reading along with your posts, these topics look great xx

  26. Oh. my. Eph-ing gosh. I don't even tie my shoes every day. I tie them on Monday and then force my feet into them the rest of the week.

But, I tell you what. This is SUCH a struggle for me. I've really struggled with blogging for months. I've never understood how people stick with it for so long without growing tired. Anyways, this really excites me. It really does. I plan to join and hope that it reintroduces me to the blogging world with a fresh perspective to ENJOY it again. Thanks for putting this together!

  28. This makes me SO excited and nervous all at the same time! But I think this is the perfect idea to get rid of the blogging pressure I've been feeling lately...I know exactly what you mean when you say you feel like every post has to be perfect. I used to just write what was on my mind, throw in a few pictures (whether they were amazing or not), and go on my way. Not that we should all put up crappy pictures and posts, but I like the idea of the freedom to not obsess about every little detail so much.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Jenni, I love the idea of this but I would only participate if there´s a chance that I can really blog everyday. My birthday is at the end of May and usually I like to get away and unplug for a couple of days. I know I could schedule 31 posts but is this really the essence of the challenge? I don´t think so.

So I am giving this another thought and let you know. May 1st latest :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. wow, everyday?! that's super ambitious. BUT I'm always up for a challenge, even if I know I might fail. And May feels like such a great month to do this because April has (and still is) just super chaotic, so I have really been slacking with my words in my post's.

    ReplyDelete
  31. i'm in! i need to start setting up posts now. that way i have them when i get busy.

  35. Jenni. This is like an answer to my blogging prayers! I've been in a serious creative rut lately and I think this might be the thing to jumpstart my blogging again. Definitely planning to participate.

  36. I love this idea Jenni :) I would really like to participate. I wasn't sure at first, but after reading all of your topics I think it sounds like a lot of fun! I have some things planned during the month of May, so I know this will be a challenge, but I'm up for it. Thanks for organizing this, and putting in the time to create the list of topics as well.

  39. I may decide to be bold and do this... key word: MAY ;) Pun intended. I haven't blogged consistently in months, so I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to do this. But if I plan, I might conquer it! This is awesome, Jenni!

    ReplyDelete
  40. love this idea! thanks for putting so much energy into creating the prompts!

  41. Jenni, I almost want to create a blog just for the month of May. This sounds like so much fun.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I really want to do this and I will put the photo at the end of my blog but I don't know how to hyper link it? Do I just copy the link in the box??

    1. Thanks girl! :) Yes, just copy the little code in the box and paste it into your post under the "HTML" tab (not the "compose" tab). The button will link to this post automatically!

  46. What a great idea! Topics are great and I can't wait for this challenge to start! I' ve been blogging a long time ago and stopped because I was so under pressure to write super interesting and cool posts for my readers, and it was not an easy thing to do always...especially on daily bases. But recently I've started a new blog! And I promised to myself - no more "I write because I have to"... This challenge you're starting is an extra boost to my blogging plan because of all those lovely topic ideas you came up to.
I alredy can predict tons of great May blogs thanks to you :)
Maybe something like this would be organize again, for some other month.... And maybe we could all agree that each one of us comes up with an idea for the future topic, then gatter all topics suggestions and you could pick them randomly for some other month!

Anyhow, I'll be glad to participate in this challenge!
As well as put the challenge button on my blog :)

    Best,
    Suzana

  113. Hi - found you through Tina at Like Ordinary Life...
Lots of great prompts here! I'll be using a lot of them in the weeks to come for sure. Doubt I'll manage to post EVERY day, though, so I changed your button to say "blog every OTHER day (or so) in May" lol. It's on my sidebar at www.uttleystake.com
Looking forward to linking up and hopping around to see what your prompts inspire!

    Cheers,
    Uttley

  116. I'm up for it - sort of, I'll put your badge on my site and join you in May but I'm glad there is no blog police, I have been looking forward to a break. I am on the last day of the A to Z blogging challenge which has been exhausting but fun. I love the idea of prompts so I'll get through them eventually.. well at least I'll try. I hope you find your bliss again :)

  136. Hi Jenni! My name is Holly and I just found you through a friend who is going to do the May blogging challenge... and I think I may give it a whirl too! I'm going to share your post with some friends too. I'm also in Austin and a photographer... it's really nice to meet you. :)

  138. Cool! I really enjoy prompted blogging, and just finished up a blog challenge for March. I sat April out, but I'm really looking forward to this! My friend Paula steered me toward you, and I've added your feed to my reader. Bring it on!

    ReplyDelete
  139. I definitely want to try to do this! If we're using a prompt, can it be any prompt or should it be the one you've listed for the day?

(Ex. Can we use a Day 3 prompt on Day 10?)

    1. Hi Alex, you can do whatever you'd like! But as far as the linkup portion goes, I imagine most people will be sticking to the topic of the day and curious to see what others wrote about it, but there really are no hard and fast rules. :)

  146. I'll do this. I need things to write about.

p.s. I am your 4,000 follower. I'm not saying I want anything. But I'm just putting it out there that I am awesome at being #4000.

also, congrats. that's a big milestone.

  148. Hey Jenni, I'm a new reader and I'm going to give this a try, it's such a great idea and will be a good re-fresh for my blog, I think... wish me luck! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  149. Oh man, Jenni, this is just what I needed it. I knew I wouldn't blog much while in Texas so before heading out, I drafted an editorial calendar and tried to do a few things to get more organized about blogging. This 31-day challenge may be just what I need to get me in the habit of prioritizing instead of procrastinating.

  150. I'm in, what a great idea! May is my month for challenges, I'm also doing a walking lunge & push up challenge I designed for myself and some of my blog readers are joining:) This will take some dedication to blog everyday, as we are working on moving the end of May. Thanks for the prompts, it will help and give me some ideas.

    ReplyDelete
  151. I'll just be coming off of a challenge today and thought that May would be a time to rest and regroup...but...your May challenge sounds like it will be so easy, breezy and fun that I'm not sure if I want to pass this up. So, I guess I have like 12-24 hours to decide. Maybe I'll jump in and do it. Maybe I'll just read along here to check out hour other people interpret your daily topics. Time will tell.

    ReplyDelete
  154. What a fun idea! I might join in. I really love the first day topic. And I'm with you on the whole non-pressure writing thing. I think people get a little too caught up in that. Blogging should be fun! I blogged every day last August (31 days!) and it was tough but quite an interesting challenge to force yourself to write every day.

    ReplyDelete
  155. I am excited to give this a try. I posted about the challenge on my blog and gave a link back to you to give you credit for the rules and topic ideas. It's going to be fun.

    ReplyDelete
  156. Sounds good! Any idea on how to do this with a photo blog?

    ReplyDelete
  157. So excited for this challenge! Hopefully it'll help me blog since I don't have anything exciting going on but studying for finals! Definitely gonna try my best to keep on top of it!

  163. This is such perfect timing for me! I've always wanted to participate in a "blog every day" month but haven't found the motivation. But May is Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month (that's what my blog is mainly about - living with CF) and I would love to help raise awareness by blogging every day. Thank you for the incentive :) Can't wait to check in with others to see what keeps them blogging this month!
