(very late) Thoughts on Les Mis and anticipation for Mr Gatsby

I finally saw Les Mis on Tuesday evening, and then went back and saw it again last night. I know I'm SUPER late (you're probably all thinking this is OLD NEWS, Jenni), but I just have to express myself here. I honestly think that was the best movie I have EVER seen. I mean, you have to like musicals. And you have to be OK with sitting through a three hour musical that will most assuredly leave you emotionally depleted by the end.  But WOW. Hugh Jackman?! He blew me away. Anne Hathaway's "I dreamed a dream" scene? Goosebumps just thinking about it. Eddie Redmayne (Marius)? Hot damn.

I don't know that this movie is for everyone, but the emotion conveyed is absolutely palpable, and I'm sort of a glutton for punishment when it comes to these things. I was borderline ugly-crying by the last scene both times, but I think that has a lot to do with my own personal loss of a father-figure this last year and my ability to relate to some extent. Gosh. Just breathtaking. I guess that's all I really need to say. If you haven't see it yet, hurry up and go before it's out of theaters!

ALSO. Have you guys seen the trailer for The Great Gatsby? Leo hasn't looked this good since Titanic. I AM SO EXCITED. I think this is going to be a really interesting adaptation. The movie is by the same director as Romeo and Juliet, which happens to be one of my favorite movies of all time, so I'm preeeetty sure I'm going to love this.

The last third of this trailer gives me full body chills every time.

Did you see Les Mis? Did you like it? And what do you think of the Gatsby trailer?

  1. oops, you typed a "p" instead of a "b" for Gatsby! :) I am so excited for that movie though! I loved the book and re-read it just a few months ago to get ready for the movie! And I STILL haven't seen Le Mis...I heard the entire movie was signing, no speaking and it kind of turned me off although I LOVE musicals. Your review may have changed my mind, I might go see it this weekend! I wish you lived here and we could go to movies together, I know jonathan will NOT go see Le Mis with me! :)

  2. Now I think, since you know me, you'd probably guess that I am staying away from this movie like the plague. I hear it's amazing, and I do love the music and have even performed some of it, but I cannot, even for a million bucks cash, handle 3 hours of raw, sad, emotion. No-sir-ee-bob-cat. I'd rather get a root canal!

  3. I loved Les Mis, too! I have had the song Eponine sings before she dies in my head since I saw it weeks ago! (A Little Fall of Rain) The entire movie was beautifully done! Can't wait for Gatsby either!!

  4. I'm seeing Les Mis on Monday night (I'm wayyy late to the party, too), and I absolutely can't wait! I've been in love with the musical ever since I was in my high school's production of it. AND OMG GATSBY. I've been dying for it to come out ever since I saw a preview for it over a year ago (they've pushed the release date back at least twice). TGG is one of my favorite books, and the film looks amazing. Leo and Carey Mulligan--yay!

  5. You're not the farthest behind...I am. Les Mis hasn't even come out in Germany yet and I'm salivating for it. Makes me so jealous of everyone who's already seen it, too! And the Great Gatsby...excited is and understatement. I totally agree, Leo has got his sexy back!! :)

  6. I loved it. I'm definitely a sucker (or fan) for stories about love and law and grace and redemption. I think when things touch you deeply you remember... and it has the power to even change you. I thought it was a great movie. I'd see it again.

  7. I haven't seen Les Mis, but I really want to!

And as for the Great Gatsby trailer... I'm not really excited about it. I think its going to be an abomination actually. hahaha It's such an incredible novel, nothing should be changed. But I'm still going to see it ;)

  9. It's funny because every blogger I've read seemed to LOVE Les Mis and every person I've talked to in real life didn't care for it. For me, I was somewhere in the middle. Anne Hathaway made the movie. And there were definitely some other great scenes and songs as well. I love musicals, but didn't like that there was no talking at all. And I felt like some of the actors were not good enough singers to be in a movie where they would be singing the whole time...(mainly Russell Crowe and Amanda Seyfreid). But I Dreamed a Dream and On My Own were AMAZING!

  10. That's a new trailer! I can't wait for Gatsby- I was totally geared up for it to come this Christmas...

  11. I guess I'm the only one who didn't really like the movie.. I thought some scenes were wayyy too OTT (and I do like musicals btw). I don't know, it just didn't work for me (and that's coming from a major film lover). But soo excited for The Great Gatsby!

  12. I loved Les Miserables. I'm not to excited for The Great Gatsby though. It's one of my favorite books but they seem to have made the movie too modern.

  13. I can related to the ugly crying, like gasping and shaking with tears. And the pull of emotions was no joke. Three hours is a long time, and there maybe was a tad too much singing, but those scenes that pull on your heart strings made it totally worth it!!

  14. I would have to agree about Les Mis being one of the best movies I've ever seen EVER. The emotions that were captured in it were just stunning. When I found out HOW they filmed this movie it blew me away - rather than prerecord any of the music, it was all sung in the moment so they were able to truly act and play their role in the moment rather than prerecord something and go back and lip sync through it later. That allowed for so much REAL emotion to go into it. It was amazing and beautiful and oh my heart - I SO loved it!

And girl, I was SO ugly crying in that movie!!!

  15. Have you seen The Great Gatsby poster with Toby Maguire? Never seen him look so good until I saw that poster.

  16. Les Mis is still on my list, and while I love The Great Gatsby written, I'm not super psyched about the movie. But I will see it, because the true love of my life is the star, and how can you not see anything with Leo?? Doesn't he alone make a movie fantastical?!

  17. My sister and I went to see Les Mis when it came out on Christmas (we went to the late show after family stuffs) and we both cried like babies even though I have seen it live several times! I LOOOOVVVVEEEED Anne Hathaway! Can't wait to buy it!

  19. My husband is man enough to admit he blubbered the whole time. It's our all time favorite musical and the movie version was so visually and emotionally RAW-that's real art right there. Absolutely loved it.

  20. I have not seen Les Mis yet. But the trailers look so good.
But I am excited for the Great Gatsby!!

  22. I LOVED Les Mis and couldn't agree with you more! Also obsessed now with Eddie Redmayne. My husband is a big Les Mis fan and I caught him crying at the end- perhaps the first time I've ever seen him cry!

I'm so excited about the Great Gatsby too. Its my favorite book & I think its going to be awesome.

  23. as someone who is dating a cinematographer, I just didn't like Les Mis. I know.. I know.. blasphemy. I just expected so much more?

    Le sigh.

  24. I'm kind of scared to see Les Mis. I have a feeling it would stick with me in a disturbing way. Is it graphic? I've heard so many great things about it, but I just don't know. Feel free to talk me into it. :)

  25. I'm dying to see Les Mis. I've seen the play twice and it's always been my favorite musical. So touching, beautiful, heartbreaking, and amazing. I've been nervous to see the movie because I have such high expectations. I'm so happy to hear that you loved it so much. Now I really can't wait to see it!

  26. i want to see the Great Gatsby. can't wait. i have yet to see Les Mis ... lots of great folks within ... can't wait on that one either. but the hubby dislikes musicals so i am on my own on that one. if you think you are late on that one ... i'm super late. ha. ha!! ( :

  27. I am probably the biggest Les Mis fan that ever was...and I didn't like it. Hugh Jackman was good, the guy who played Enjolras was the best, and Eddie R was fantastic...but everyone else? Not so much. I am bitter that they chose to feature "big names" instead of "big voices". The story is always going to be amazing, but the actors they chose to portray it were not...to me.

  28. Oh...my FB friends tore me up over that opinion! Oh well :-) I'm glad that you loved it, though!

  29. I still need to see Les Mis too!! I think I might wait until it's out on DVD though, I can't be interrupted by movie theater annoyances in such movies haha :) Glad to hear you loved it so much, makes me all the more excited to see it.

  32. I loved Les Mis. I don't usually cry at films, but this time I might have shed a little tear at one point in the film that I won't say in case I spoil it for anyone!

  33. I loved Les Mis and I am soooooo excited for Gatsby! I just love the glamour of the wealthy in the 20s!!! If only we could dress like that now...

  34. Loved Les Mis, but I am anxiously awaiting Gatsby! Baz, Leo and Gatsby is like the perfect cinematic trifecta! Excited doesn't even begin to cover it!

  35. Aahhhhh I can't wait to see EITHER of these movies! Les Mis sounds like something I need to stop delaying and get into over the weekend, and the Great Gatsby looks amaaaazing!! =D

  36. I also saw Les Mis a bit late & did that awkward cry where the tears are streaming but but you don't wipe them away so no one knows you are crying? And then of course ended up with a wet neckline. From now on, that's a watch at home with tissues movies for sure!

  37. I am SO pleased you loved Les Mis. There are all sorts of extremes on the human spectrum of emotion in that movie, and it slays me every time (like you said: borderline ugly-crying).

Couldn't agree with you more about Leo and the new Gatsby movie, too. My pre-teen self couldn't get enough of him in Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of Romeo + Juliet, so I'm really excited those two teamed up again for Gatsby!
Movies are pretty magical aren't they?

  38. I haven't seen Les Mis yet, but I know I will eventually. I'm glad you liked it though! I have seen the movie before, just not as a musical, so that will be interesting when I finally see it.
And 'The Great Gatsby' looks pretty good. I really like Leonardo DiCaprio as an actor, so I'll be excited to see him in this movie. I loved him back when he did 'Romeo and Juliet' as well, so I'm with you on that being a good movie.

  39. BEYOND EXCITED for Gatsby!! It's one of my favorite books. In event planning class at school (yep, I took that...ha!) I planned an event inspired by the movie. It was awesome, even though it was only hypothetical :) The trailer...so insane and wonderful.

  40. I am so insanely excited for Great Gatsby. (And WHAT are you talking about?! He looks gorgeous in everything he's been in... I am a little obsessed, though.) All of Baz Luhrmann's movies are so exquisite in detail and I just love them. Plus I think Leo rarely picks projects that end up badly, so I am betting that it is an excellent movie. It also comes out on my husband and I's fifth anniversary, so I am delighted about that. : )

  41. I looooooved Les Mis. I seriously think about it daily and wish I could watch it on a weekly basis. I play the soundtrack every. single. day. and still cry through many of the songs. HA! I was a bit disappointed that so far it hasn't won as many awards as I was hoping (because I thought it deserved every single one!) But I truly believe it is one of the most beautiful films ever made. I am NOT a crier in movies and I too was ugly-crying haha. As much sadness as the movie conveys, it really makes my heart swell... not too many movies nowadays do that! And Eddie Redmayne? oh my... he may just be perfect.

So excited for Gatsby! Leo was my very FIRST celebrity crush and I may or may not have had his poster hanging in my room as a child. It looks brilliant.

  42. LOVED Les Mis! I'm not even that into musicals, and the only rendition of it that I had seen had been the kid's at Ian's high school where he works, so the movie version blew me away. I usually get antsy in long movies but this one just flew by. Incredible.

  43. I'VE BEING THINKING ABOUT GATSBY since last year, i love the second trailer and why it's not here already?

    love, love Leonardo Di Caprio

  44. I am over the moon excited about seeing the Great Gatsby! It's my favorite book and I couldn't be happier with the choice as Leo as Gatsby. He's so sauve and intense, it's going to be amazing.

  45. I absolutely loved Les Mis! I saw it live just a few weeks before I saw the movie so that was amazing to be able to compare the two. I (amazingly) didn't cry during the movie, but I was definitely close! I'm super excited about The Great Gatsby too. It's very reminiscent of Romeo + Juliet, and I love that!

  46. Don't feel bad, I haven't seen Les Mis yet myself. Planning to soon!
As far as Gatsby, I can't wait!!

  47. Ugh! I totally agree. Les Mis is the best movie I've ever seen too. Changed me. It will be watched over and over again.

  48. loved les mis. cant wait for gatsby....rereading the book now in anticipation :)

  49. If you can believe it, we never got Les Mis out here in theaters so I am dying for it to come out on itunes! And hahah I laughed so hard at Leo not looking this good since Titanic. I was in love with him as a kid just because of that movie. Cannot wait for Gatsby!!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Cannot wait for this film! I am so exited!

    ReplyDelete
  51. I can't even talk about Les Mis because I'll get too overwhelmed! So I think you know how I feel about it. And I absolutely can't wait for Gatsby!!! Serious chills just thinking about it.

  52. I'm beyond excited for The Great Gatsby! Have you seen the first trailer, I like it better than the second one :)

    ReplyDelete
  53. I watched about 30 minutes of "Les Mis" and stopped. I wasn't a huge fan, honestly. It was probably an issue of not watching it in the right frame of mind, so I'll most likely give it another shot. But "Gatsby"...wow. It looks amazing. I'll try and separate the movie from the book as much as possible in my head because it definitely looks very Hollywood, but it sure looks good!
