Taking on 2013

Happy 2013, folks! A brand new year stretches out before us, and like so many others, I find myself contemplating exactly what I'll do with this year.  We're all given the same number of minutes and hours in a day, and yet some of us do so much more with them. Some use that time to feed their body well, exercise, build a business, stay focused, nurture friendships, grow, change, learn. And others sort of float along like a feather in the wind, struggling, just making it by. I suppose I'm somewhere in the middle of those two extremes, but I'm afraid I've leaned too far in the negative direction lately, not utilizing my time nearly as wisely as I could.  This year I want to turn the tables on that. Duh, New Year's Resolutions typically don't make it too far past January. But this year... this year I need that to be different. As a reminder, I put bright neon stickers on the first of every month in my planner, with the word GOALS written on them. I think that goals are something that need to be constantly reevaluated and tweaked if they are to be reached. New Year's resolutions simply aren't enough. But monthly resolutions? Maybe that could work.

So what do I want to change this year? For one thing, I'm making a commitment to quality on this blog.   I plan to promote better quality sponsors and produce better quality posts. I have some ideas for that, which you may or may not notice in the coming months. Hopefully it will just be an organic addition to what you already see here. I also need to get healthy.  Sometimes people ask me what I do to stay in shape, and then I laugh in their face. I am a pretty unhealthy skinny person, to be honest with you. I sit on my ass on the computer all day, maybe exercising once a week, and somehow that has worked for me so far. But girlfriend is creeping up on her late twenties (terrifying), and I am fairly certain my body is going to turn on me any day now.

Regardless, I need to get healthy.

Matthew and I, both together and separately, are taking on some little business ventures as well. Obviously, there's my photography, which I totally plan to take to the next level in 2013. The joint business venture with Matthew is something you'll (hopefully) see here real soon.

Annnnyway, I could go on and on, but my goals aren't your problem. Bottom line is, let's make 2013 a freaking fantastic year, OK? Writing down our resolutions and feeling super happy and inspired about them isn't enough. You have to do more. Figure out what that is, and then go do it.

  7. Adorable outfit, as always. And you manage to make it look like actual winter in Austin!

Good luck with the resolutions! The Happiness Project was one of my favorite books since it broke down monthly goals, but I never actually got around to following the inspirational path. I guess there's always 2013!

  8. Hahaha - I'm an unhealthy skinny person as well and as I near 30 this year (yikes) it's happening - I'm gaining weight in little increments all over the damn place. Hardly anyone notices, but damn it, I do and it's driving me nuts. I need to become a healthier skinny person.

Happy New Year to you and Matthew and good luck tackling your new goals!

  11. Oh howww are you so gorgeous, Jenni?! I love the idea of mapping out goals at the beginning of each month rather than just lumping them all in one month and falling off track. This year, I decided to choose words to guide me throughout the year rather than mapping out a long to-do list. I know what I want, I just need the motivation and encouragement to get there, you know?

I actually wrote a post about them yesterday! Feel free to check it out if you'd like :)

Anywhooo... I usually don't give in to giveaways...but I'm kind of in love with the LOVE bracelet, and also, the LIGHT one on their website. Fingers crossed for meee.

I've said before how I think it's awesome how you have your own photography business, so for you entering into another one...pretty cool. You're defintely inspire me to go my my goals like that. If only I could have a goal! That's one thing I'm going to work on in 2013!
But I'm with you on the skinny girl who-doesn't-eat-that-well! That's me as well. I have to make that another goal!
But I like your idea of making a resolution a month. Much better idea :)

for me, this year i've down a vision board (you can have a peek on my blog). i hope having a vision of what i want to accomplish in 2013 and beyond will help me get there.

    have a great day :)

  44. Oh that pom-pom hat is too adorable! I do wish I could wear something like that, but I have the curly and slightly bushy hair type, which makes me look ridiculous in a hat like that.

  48. I am so happy to have found your blog in 2012, and I'm excited to continue reading in 2013! ...Also, I'm totally with you on needing to get healthy this year! I love that you said you're a "pretty unhealthy skinny person" because that's exactly how I feel too. I just know my metabolism is going to quit on me someday soon, and I'm not looking forward to it! Good luck to you on all you do in 2013 :)

  49. Beautiful pictures, as always. I love what you're wearing (especially the hat)! As for your goal about being more healthy, the great thing about the internet and the blogging community is that there are so many great recipes and workouts online as well as countless accountability partners. It's a great goal and I totally look forward to seeing you working at it. I love that you refer to what you're working towards as "goals" rather than "resolutions." I think the problem with resolutions is that there is no transitioning, no leeway, and once you fall off the wagon you're done for the year. Goals require work, they aren't cold-turkey commitments and I love that. You may like The College Prepster's New Years series because she is doing a similar thing and picking a theme for each month, identifying goals within that area, and then blogging about it. New blog content helps fulfill one goal and is the completed goal that keeps on giving because it holds you accountable to the others! I'm also really excited to hear about the business you and Matthew are launching!
