On Saturday, Mother Dearest and I headed out to visit the Farmer’s Market at the Triangle downtown, which we hadn’t been by just yet. I’d heard good things, and boy was I not disappointed. After all those lessons on hunger I’ve learned these past few weeks (read the diatribe I wrote on this topic yesterday, if you haven’t already), I was ready to get out and do some serious food ogling, especially since now I CAN EAT IT.
What is it about farmer’s markets that makes you want to eat—nay, revere—your vegetables? I swear, when I see bushel upon bushel of gorgeous, fresh, and organic produce grown lovingly by locals, I sort of want to stuff my bags with them (the vegetables, not the locals) and bring them happily home with me, where I could research recipes with which to prepare them deliciously, and then feel overall better about life since I just fed myself and my husband something that came out of the ground and not a can or a carton or a box.
But alas, buying loads of organic produce at the farmer’s market is not exactly cost conscious for those budget minded individuals such as ourselves, so sometimes I leave feeling a little down that the majority of my food purchases will have to come from the boring old regular grocery store, where I’m pretty sure I picked up that 3 Week Satan Virus because that place is crawling with harried mothers and kids that were probably just playing in their own feces.
Anyway. Enjoy the lovely farmer’s market photos below, and definitely check to see if your own city has one, too! And then go there! :)
And here’s what I wound up taking home…
There’s definitely some toasted raisin walnut bread with butter and strawberry-rhubarb compote in my future, as well as fresh brown eggs, kale chips, and this panini recipe with arugula! YUM. (next jam by Confituras I’d like to try is the strawberry-vanilla bean flavor… can you say HEAVEN IN YOUR MOUTH?!)
Happy Monday everyone!

gorgeoussss photos! looks like a dream! I LOVE farmers markets!!!
ReplyDeleteWow! Just perfect - and your photographs are getting better and better! That bread = omg.

I love the farmer's market! There is absolutely nothing that makes me happier on a Sat morning :)
ReplyDeleteI've made that exact panini recipe with arugula for my husband. He loves it! Instead of buying chipotle mayonnaise, I mixed up our own!

farmer's markets are one of my favorite things in the world. lucky for me, fresh produce at the market helps us save money, rather than be more expensive, so i go there as much as i can. yummm fresh fruit.
ReplyDeleteand i agree with Daryl up there- your photography is already making such an improvement. you have a gift, lady :)
hahaha, playing in their own feces..love it! Sometimes, you know it to be true. ;)

ReplyDeletesuch gorgeous photos!
ReplyDeleteGross! My kids don't play in their feces! We carry sanitizer and wipes wherever we go. But I also love the Farmers Market. We have one about a mile and a half away from our home that is open every Saturday. My 2 year old and I will be riding our bike there this Saturday!
ReplyDeleteoh and that bread looks delicious! and you and your mom are so pretty. how is she?
ReplyDeletekale chips are AWESOME...
ReplyDeletebut my favorite kale recipe is:
1 can chickpeas
1 huge bunch kale
soy sauce...
throw in a pan, cook it up, then try not to eat the entire thing!
Beautiful pictures! I love going to the market (we have a pretty big one here :) and perusing the aisles.
ReplyDeleteit's sad we lived a block from the triangle and NEVER went to the farmers market! must go soon!
ReplyDeleteI've never been to a farmer's market yet, but I can't waaait to go! :) Lovely photos by the way.
ReplyDeletebeautiful photos. there is something so therapeutic about walking through a farmers market. so many little treasures. Looks like you found some great stuff!
ReplyDelete(and glad you are feeling better!)
Haha! I shouldn't have read this post before lunch...now I am starving! Isn't there just something about a Farmer's Market that makes you feel so adventurous, and like you are one of those cooking goddesses on the food network? :-) I know what you mean about the whole going-back-to-the-grocery-store bit...everything all of a sudden feels so sub-par.- Alas...
ReplyDeleteP.S.*this comment does not require a response, so delete it from your inbox haha ;-)*
great photos! looks so fun. you and your mom are so pretty.
ReplyDeletegreat photos! are framers markets expesive where you are? as in Scotland, although it is great produce-you REALLY have to pay for them at farmers markets
ReplyDelete@Robyn--yep, pretty darn pricey! I'd say prices are probably 1/3 to 1/2 higher than at the regular grocery store. :(
ReplyDeleteI think farmer's markets are my happy place :) lovely pictures!
ReplyDeleteoh my stomach! you are making me hungry. i absolutely love farmer's markets but haven't tried the local one since we moved.
ReplyDeletei actually LOLed at kids playing in their own feces hahaha. when i hit up markets, i head straight for the baked goods. dangerous!! and probably totally defeats the main purpose of going to the market in the first place.

We love the local farmers markets, we have a lot of them out here! I, too, want to buy everything in sight :)
ReplyDeleteI've always been a huge fan of local farmer's markets. And delicious treats.
ReplyDeleteits impossibly hard to restrain yourself at a farmers market. The ones in London just used to pull me in the for the incredible smell of breads, cheese and fresh fruits wafting around the city. Markets in Cyprus are a little more rough and ready and less glamourous, but boy are they cheap. Thats the upside; you have to sift through a huge pile of muddy whatever but you can get everything you ever dreamed of for less the 15 euros (20 dollars i think) and the little old grannys from the villages with their home marinated olives and jams etc make it a totally worthwhile experience if anyone is every in cyprus. The best bit is you can eat again! hurrray. that bread looks to die for. not jealous at all (hides face under a cushion) :)
ReplyDeleteI'm in love with the colors in these photos! Beautiful :)
ReplyDeleteOh Boy Green Tomoatoes!" that's so cute!
ReplyDeleteWe can find a FM almost every day of the week here in San Deigo, but I don't go often enough. :( Bad me.
Lovely pics!!
i love farmer's markets. maybe i should head down to austin next time i'm in the mood for one.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know about the farmer's market at the Triangle. Do you know if it's every Saturday? You took some beautiful shots and the strawberry-rhubarb compote sounds dee-lish!! Glad you are feeling better! And don't feel bad, most of my food comes from the boring ol' grocery store too!
ReplyDeletexo,
Shanna
See if there's a farm co-op in your area- they're getting more popular in the SE, I know. We have a weekly farm delivery and it's amazing- fresh, seasonal, organic- and not much more price-wise than buying similar (organic, at least) at the supermarket. I love farmer's markets, too, but when I forget which day it is (each village/town has a different day and frequency, it seems), it's nice to know I can depend on good stuff coming straight to me! Strawberry-vanilla bean jam sounds GREAT- I'm gonna have to add that to my "keep an eye out for" list!
ReplyDeleteI really wish Houston had better farmers markets!!
ReplyDeletegorgeous pictures, I love farmers markets!

I love farmers markets!! I never end up buying the food there, because I hate how it ends up in my fridge and me never eating it, but I love to go and see the food! And I love that first picture of the flowers! So pretty.
ReplyDeleteAnd your mom! Aww. I hope she's doing well.
Okay so I don't comment much b/c school leaves little time for me to connect with my favie bloggers lately haha :)
ReplyDeleteBUT
I just wanted to say that I've been loving your pictures and when I saw the post title that you went to some sort of "market" I was so excited to click and see what you took pictures of. And, you didn't fail me :) FUn FUN FUN pictures yay!!
I'm getting the 5D Mark ii in a few weeks and I can't even wait!
We have 2 Farmer's markets around here but I haven't been to either this season. Def. want to go now!
ReplyDeleteyour pictures are phenomenal - my favorite thing about our local FM back in new hampshire was always the milk ...they had an incredible list of flavors of this fresh delicious milk - vanilla was my favorite...but my siblings always got blueberry :)
ReplyDeleteGorgeous pics!
ReplyDeleteLove Farmers' Markets! We are lucky to have quite a few around us and I certainly don't go often enough!
ReplyDeleteOh my god, I DIE!! I love farmers markets. THE BEST!
ReplyDeletelove <3
ReplyDeleteLOVE your gorgeous, gorgeous photos and farmers markets! just wait until Cam and I have our winery and farm and then we'll sell organic homegrown food to you at affordable prices (:
ReplyDeleteI'm basically on your toast/applesauce diet right now. It happens often for me (since I mentioned I have Crohn's disease). I haven't been able to eat any raw fruits & veggies besides bananas and applesauce for years now, and sometimes I am SO desperate that I'll sneak a piece of lettuce from my husband's salad and pay for it later. If I ate, say, a salad, I would literally have to go to the Emergency Room for excessive bleeding and be put on a morphine drip. But, I put my hope in the fact that one day I will eat all the fruits & veggies I want, even if it's in heaven! lol :-) sorry for the long comment, just been thinking about food a lot lately too!
ReplyDeleteyou just made me hungry immediately following breakfast! (: I love fresh veggies and fruit... makes me so pleased to take my goodies home with me after a market run. I do miss the markets in swiss though, they had a daily one...!
ReplyDeleteThis post actually made me dribble. There's a farmers market by Victoria in London which we drive past every time I visit we seriously MUST stop now and have a look!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the inspiration!
Lisa xx
I am SO EXCITED for Farmer's Markets this year! They seriously complete my summer. They are so romantic, fun, and I love getting fresh, local produce.
ReplyDeletethat bread looks delish! i love going to our local farmer's market. they always have the best stuff! we're moving this weekend so i'm sad that we won't be able to go as often, but i'm going to do a search for other markets near our new place. hopefully i find one!
ReplyDeleteLovely photos! They make me want to journey over to the Farmer's Market right now ~ I wish it wasn't raining! boo!
ReplyDeleteAmazing farmers market finds! I'm obsessed with arugula lately and would love to score some at my farmers market!
ReplyDeleteI love farmers markets! Gorgeous pics too. The one of your mom is so sweet... although her smile doesn't quite seem to reach her eyes. You can tell she's missing Edd. I hope that's okay for me to notice, but that shot of her just had so much emotion in it. Hope she's doing okay!
ReplyDeleteOrganic market is the great place to find organic vegetables and fruits.
