February 21, 2012

this just happened.

mark ii 120-1

See that sexy beast in the picture above? Do you see it?!  The camera, people, not the girl who hasn’t bathed or brushed her hair yet today.

That, my friends, is what I was talking about when I said I was going to make shit happen this year (or part of it, anyway).  For you camera enthusiasts, it’s a Canon 5D Mark II (with a 50mm 1.4 lens), and I’ll go ahead and admit right away that it’s a little like handing over a super high-tech toy to a perplexed two year old.  BUT IT’S AWESOME.

All weekend I was researching my purchase before I finally bit the bullet, and yesterday Matthew (who loaned me half the purchase price) made up a contract complete with terms and penalties and everything if I don’t make monthly payments on my loan and start up my business like I’ve been running my mouth about for months.  And I fully expect that he’ll take me to court if I don’t hold up my end up the deal.  (Law school makes you hard.)  It’s OK, though… I need that extra push.

So I’m planning to pour my soul into manuals and tutorials over the next weeks and months, and the thought actually sort of excites me since I’m learning something that I’m really passionate about.  I’m trying not to get discouraged by the fact that I’m still in that gap between good taste and actual skill—because I know I’ll get there.  It doesn’t happen overnight.

Here’s a few pictures from around my house (all were taken within the first 24 hours of buying this camera, so I certainly don’t claim to know what the heck I’m doing yet).  Have a great Tuesday!

  5. YES! I want this camera and this lens! GO YOU! This is the lens we were talking about :-) I'm going to settle for the f1.8 I think but when I actually have some money to spend, I'm going to buy it. I'm super proud of you actually DOING this photography business and I like Matthew even more for pushing you with his legal know-how (ha, I feel like I'm in a super cool club because I know law stuff.. even though I dropped it.. irrelevant.. your honour..) Point is - cannot wait to see more and learn more!!! X

  14. that is my dream camera! i've been wanting that for a while, can't wait to see your updates since i actually am pretty lazy about "learning" technology and tend to just try to figure things out by trial and error. i am a patient girl, until i have to read loads of instructions, then i become a mental patient (complete with ratted hair and blankly staring out windows with bad posture). best wishes xx

  15. Jenni that's amazing!!! Matthew and my husband sound exactly the same it's so funny.
When I convinced Joel i wanted a kitchen aid stand mixer, we made a deal that I had to use it once a week...haha.

  23. Kyle & I just purchased a Nikon D7000 - both for his hopes of starting a videography business and my hopes of making my blog a smidge more appealing. I'm pretty sure we had it boiled down to the Nikon or the Canon you purchased and both were equal in the running. Based on what I've seen of your eye for pictures I'm sure the results will be amazing. (Btw, I love that bit about your husband taking you to court. We operate in the same way as far as business ventures are concerned.)

  26. You are naturally talented! I could get a camera that amazing and still not get half as good shots as you have here! Just think how incredible you are going to be in a just a few months!

I got the Canon 40D for Christmas and already have the 50mm 1.4, and got the 35mm f/2 for Christmas as well! I took a class with MckMama and read a whole lotta Pioneer Woman's stuff and it REALLY helped me! I'd love to talk nerdy camera stuff anytime you want!

Can't wait to see what you do with it :)

    ReplyDelete
  50. yayyyyy!!! SO exciting! I'm trying to be extra happy for you instead of a little green with envy :) haha And are you kidding? These photos are gorgeous, of course! You already know what you're doing! You either have the eye for photography or you don't - and you have it. Sure there are some technical things you can learn to get EVEN better, but the natural talent is there, and that's the most important, because THAT can't be taught! Have fun playing with your new toy!!

    ReplyDelete
  51. AWESOME!!! what were you using before? i'm going to get rid of my rebel this year and get something nicer... i was thinking the 60D... thoughts??

  54. love these picts! can't wait to see more and what's in store for you in 2012! I am actually trying to sell my current camera - so tough to get serious buyers on Craigslist. Thinking of going to Ebay. Did you sell your prev camera? Any tips? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Congrats! So exciting to get a new toy.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Jenni!!!
That is my camera and lens of choice! If you're looking for another lens I highly recommend having the 24-70 f2.8L. It's super fast and a good lens to have around when shooting landscape. The 1.4 is AMMMAZING! and I love it, but it can get a little annoying when shooting in nature or little kids.

That being said. I love the Mark II and the 1.4, and it's really amazing once you get use to it. A bit heavier then the Rebel that you were shooting with, so you'll build some muscle! :-D

  57. Omygoodness. I can't wait to see all the awesomeness that comes for your new camera. I'm so jealous. Really. But also so excited for you. Someday I'm going to buy my own Canon 5D and then make a trip to TX so you can show me how to use it. ;)

  58. So proud of you!!! It's amazing what a difference a great camera makes. I think these preliminary pictures are already pretty dang good :)

  67. Nice camera Jenni!! That's so awesome that you're so passionate about something and you're making something happen out of it. I wish I knew what I was really passionate about!
I'm sure you've mentioned it before, but what made photography a huge passion of yours? And what will your business focus on? I know it's photography, but is it on something specific?
But I'm happy for you, and can't wait to see the continuing photos you take!

  68. Two things:

    1) That camera is freaking amazing and the photos your shared turned out beautifully!

    2) Congratulations on taking that leap and purchasing the camera, which will start you on this great new path! It can be scary to start something new, but clearly you have a lot of encouragement (from Matthew and family, of course, and your grateful readers!) and I for one, cannot wait to see what you accomplish!

  94. I randomly just stumbled on this post and had to comment because of the contract your husband made you sign about paying him back. My dad is a lawyer and does the exact same thing with matters like this. My 9-year-old sister wanted a dog recently, so he created an excel chart and contract she had to sign with duties, a timeline, and penalties for how she could earn her dog. haha I am laughing out loud because I honestly just thought my dad was crazy (and a little heartless for charging me interest once!) but now I realize it's just a law school thing. Oh law boys...
