Stripes or plaid? Help!

Matthew and I have a couple’s photo session this weekend, and for weeks now I’ve been feverishly hunting for the perfect mustard or gold dress.  96.4% of Matthew’s clothing is blue, so I wanted something that would really contrast nicely with a shirt he already has.

In a happy little turn of fate on Wednesday night (and thanks to the ninja-like awesomeness of my best friend, who spotted it first), I found that perfect golden dress (here—it’s 50% off today! WTH!) and snatched it right up.  That baby had my name all over it—there were only two left, one of which happened to be my size! When does that ever happen unless God himself intended for you to have that dress?  Never, that’s when.

But now I have a dilemma.  I posed this question to Twitter and Instagram yesterday as well, but the response so far has been split down the middle.  Should Matthew wear the plaid or the stripes?!  The setting will be natural (vs. urban), and while I’m leaning towards the plaid, I adore the stripes as well.  Maybe I’ll make him change half through the session, but still, I’m curious to hear your opinions.  What’ll it be, my friends? The stripes or the plaid?

Happy Friday!

  1. I vote plaid... but I love love the stripe shirt as well. So yes, making him change is the only option.

  2. i LOVE a man in plaid.. or stripes! hahaha so i can see how this is split down the middle..

the ONLY option you got is for him to do an outfit change.. and how COOL would that be?! the dudes NEVER get to change (unless the girls change, too)..

but if i HAD to choose one.. i would definitely pick the plaid (:

can't wait to see these gorgeous pictures!!

  3. The thing is they both create a different persona for him: the plaid seems to match his outdoorsy vibe, but the stripes look super chic next to the color of that dress.

I'd vote for making him change :)

    xo,
    Mel

  4. I love them both but the stripes win!

  5. Oh man....I like them both. And I LOVE your dress. I think that the halftime uniform change is the way to go for him!

  6. stripes! more dressy. SO cute! cant wait to see these pictures :)

  7. I don't think you can go wrong here, but I'll throw a vote in for stripes :)

    ReplyDelete
  8. votes stripes on Instagram and doing it again ... i just think it matches your dress better! but i am sure that whichever way you go, the pictures will be incredible!!!

    ReplyDelete
  9. Stripes. I love the plaid, but it's a little too casual for me. Stripes always look good on a man :)

  10. Plaid for sure! The colors are just as saturated as the mustard and the photos will look so rich :) Glad I'm not the only one in love with mustard right now!

    ReplyDelete
  11. I vote stripes - though either one will look awesome. (o:

    ReplyDelete
  12. Even though I voted on Twitter, I'm voting again in hopes of skewing the vote! :)

    PLAID! :)

    ReplyDelete
  13. It depends on the style you want - I love the stripes for something more traditional but i LOVE the plaid for more of a country feel =) LOVE that dress

    ReplyDelete
  14. I vote strips! That dress looks beautiful!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I have been a blog lurker for quite awhile, and never commented. However, I HAVE to now, because I feel so strongly about the stripes!! Haha. They just go so great with the dress. Much classier than the plaid :)

Can't wait to see the pics!

    ReplyDelete
  16. I vote half the time plaid and half the time stripes so you have more options in the end. The stripes look more formal and the plaid more rustic...

    ReplyDelete
  17. Plaid plaid! Definitely plaid! It's deeper, richer, compliments and contrasts your dress beautifully! Definitely plaid. :)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Personally, I like the stripes. The plaid would be bolder, but those colors just say "fall" to me...not winter on the verge of spring.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hmmm...like them both, but for a natural setting, plaid seems so much more "hot, hunky, outdoorsman" plus it ties in with your belt and makes your dress seem more "sexy western". So maybe I just totally made up those fashion categories, but there are my two cents. - I like the idea of changing halfway though if you can't decide!

    ReplyDelete
  20. I like them both, but I'm voting stripes :)

    ReplyDelete
  21. This is so hard! they both look great but I'm gonna vote Stripes!

    ReplyDelete
  22. I think the stripes is a bit more put-together than the plaid. Depends on what vibe you're going for but the stripes have my vote!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think the plaid complements that mustard more !

    ReplyDelete
  24. Based on the setting and that brown belt that goes with your dress...I would go with plaid. I think the stripes are nice but maybe better suited for a more urban backdrop. So I would def go plaid.

    ReplyDelete
  25. polka dots.

    duh.

ok...it's clear. you've got to do both. trust me on this. you will be SO happy you did. if matthew really doesn't want to, then let him choose which one. i'll tell you why. whatever he feels happiest in, the pictures will reflect it. good luck!!

    ReplyDelete
  26. The colors go perfectly with the plaid, but the stripes complement the color of your dress so well and give it such a 'light' feel, which would be great for a natural shoot. Personally, I'd make him change halfway through. It wouldn't take long, and that would just give you more variety of pictures :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. I vote for a quick change halfway through because they're both great, but if you had to pick one - go plaid!

    ReplyDelete
  28. While the plaid matches the dress better since it has mustard in it...I think the stripes GO better with the dress and the overall feel.

Stripes girl. I would nevarrrr let you down.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'm a photographer.. and my vote says Plaid - deff. has the contrast going!

  30. I would have to say plaid - it really pops with that (stunning) dress!

Thanks for stopping by my blog and for your lovely comment. So honoured:)

  31. I vote Stripes!! (Plaid always seems lumberjack-y to me)

    ReplyDelete
  32. I was leaning towards the stripes because the grey (is it grey or blue?) would look so nice with your dress. But after looking at your photo for a little while, I think I like the plaid -- it'll look fantastic with the dress and in the natural setting. If you're going for a more natural, rustic look then I think plaid is the way to go. The stripes would look too wedding-y dressy.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Oh man, here's me not being helpful at all: BOTH!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I like the stripes better. Either way you'll be cute...but it depends on what you're going for. Plaid is totally country. Good luck! -Melissa

    ReplyDelete
  35. I love the plaid! I think it would really compliment your dress while still providing that contrast you're going for. Does he have a preference? Does he wear one more over the other? Maybe that would help if one is more "him"?

Can't wait to see the pictures - I know whichever you choose will look great!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I vote Stripes, goes with the texture of your dress.

    ReplyDelete
  37. hmm.
    I'd go with the stripes.
I love the plaid shirt, but I feel like the colors and the print and everything might be too busy.

    ReplyDelete
  38. PLAID!! I think it will go well with the natural atmosphere and it compliments your dress without being matchy matchy. Plus it will give a more relaxed feel to your pictures I think.

So fun! I need to do a couples shoot with my husband again.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Oh wow, what a tough decision. I LOVE how the plaid has a tiny little bit of mustard in it to go with the dress. I think it would look stunning. But...I love the stripes, too! Ahhh, I'm no help! The good news is I really don't think you can go wrong; you'll both look great either way!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I am loving the plaid!!!!!!! cant wait to see the pictures!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Plaid if you are wearing boots of some sort and stripes if you are wearing heels

    ReplyDelete
  42. I think the stripes has much classier and timeless feel to them.

    ReplyDelete
  43. The plaid will be so much better for a natural seting! The stripes to me are much more modern and not for the type of photoshoot you seem to be going for.

Either way I'm sure they'll look amazing though!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Definitely STIPES! Look forward to seeing pics!

    ReplyDelete
  45. I lean towards stripes as a general rule...
But absolutely change halfway through! If he's willing, then why not?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Definitely plaid, I think it fits more with a natural setting...what's the photo shoot for? :)

    ReplyDelete
  47. Depends on the overall feel you're going for with the photos. The plaid fits with the outdoorsy vibe and give a more "country" feel to your dress. The strips are a bit more business chic and make the dress seem a little more dressed up, if that makes sense. So do you want his outfit to contrast the dress and make it feel a bit more country (if so, go with the plaid) or do you want him to compliment the dress and have both feel more urban-chic (if so, go with the stripes)?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Plaid all the way! The strips are ALMOST too matchy, matchy, but I love the contrast of the plaid against the yellow dress. Gorgeous!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I feel the plaid is more relaxed and the stripes are more formal.
    So I vote PLAID!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Definitely plaid!
Even though the dress is solid, it still gives off a stripy look.. in a way... do you see it? maybe its just me..
I think the plaid would go perfectly to mix it up a bit!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Ohhh I love the color of the plaid, but I think that you should go with the stripes. I can't wait to see the photos!

    ReplyDelete
  52. haha, are you sure you wanted to do this? I saw the split thru twitter and instagram and now the split on the blog? I'd be more lost than ever. hahaha
but I'm liking both and fully support your changing 1/2 way through. ;)

  53. I vote stripes.

But would totally change halfway through.

You guys will look awesome either way!

And how in the heck do you get your husband to do a photo session. Oh man, its like pulling teeth at my house.

  54. i feel like the stripes are less trendy and will compliment the dress.

but of course i love the plaid too.

but my final vote - stripes!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Definately plaid. I think if he wore the striped shirt you guys would look a little washed out. The dark plaid top will make your dress pop. But, you guys will look adorable regardless.

    ReplyDelete
  56. STRIPES!! STRIPES!!! STRIPES!!!
Does that count as 3 votes?? hehe

    ReplyDelete
  57. Ok 1. That dress is AMAZING! You're going to look GOOD in your pictures :) -- well you always look good but you know what I mean, and 2. Plaid all the way (but maybe an outfit change 1/2 way wouldn't be the worst thing ever since the stripes are pretty awesome too).

    ReplyDelete
  58. stripes. stripes. stripes.

i'm sure your pictures will be amazing--they always are!!

    ReplyDelete
  59. I think the stripes look a bit more formal and the plaid's on the casual side. I guess it depends on the look you want.

Saw your instagram pic. You look hot!

    Happy Friday!

    ReplyDelete
  60. I love the plaid, BUT i think the stripes will go better with your dress :)
why don't you both have two outfits so that he can wear both shirts and you can buy something new ? :) just a thought lol

    ReplyDelete
  61. Stripes!! God told me that since he intended for you to have that dress, he also intends for your hubby to wear stripes! :)

    ReplyDelete
  62. Tough one! Initially I would have said plaid because of the color contrast but now I think stripes. I think it adds more to your dress than the plaid.

    ReplyDelete
  63. plaid is kinda my thing (i'm stuck in the 90s) but i vote stripes!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Do both! The plaid "matches" your dress but the stripes are dressier (and would go well in pictures that are more city, less country)

    ReplyDelete
  65. Stripes! Plaid looks too Christmas-y.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I say stripes, because the plaid looks (even if it's not) flannel-y, which is too heavy to go with a strapless maxi dress! Have a great shoot!

    ReplyDelete
  67. My initial response was to shout plaid, but I do love the stripes and now I am torn...I'm not help sorry :)

    ReplyDelete
  68. Love both and I can't realllllly decide, but the plaid seems more casual and stripes more dressy, so go for whichever look you're aiming for most!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Plaid! But I say have him change halfway through.

    ReplyDelete
  70. PLAID! But trying both is a great idea.

    ReplyDelete
  71. What shoes are you planning on wearing? And are you going to wear a cardi or some kind of jacket over top the dress? I think if you're planning on wearing heels and being dressed up yourself, put Matthew in stripes! Super chic! But if you're going more rustic, say cowboy boots and dressing down the dress, put him in plaid! Can't go wrong with either, but I think it'd look best to have you two are matching the same vibe rather than one dressy and one rustic. Can't wait to see the pics!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  72. I vote Stripes, the plaid does have the same hint of gold as your dress, but I know you in the gold dress with your dark hair contrasting with Matthew in the lighter stripes=STUNNING!

    ReplyDelete
  73. @Natural Ingredients--I just sent her an email to ask about that, but I don't know your email address to get back with you on the answer. Feel free to email me (jenni.storyoml@gmail.com) or I'm sure she wouldn't mind if you emailed her either (nichelle.vintagewannabee@gmail.com)! :)

    ReplyDelete
  74. i didn't see what anyone else wrote because i didn't want to be swayed...if it were me i'd go plaid all the way. you all are going to have some gorgeous pics!

    ReplyDelete
  75. Plaid. and mine is the only answer that really matter. clearly.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Though both are great, I'd have to say stripes. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  77. STRIPES STRIPES STRIPES!!!

But I also think it would be a good idea to have him change halfway.

    ReplyDelete
  78. plus if he changes halfway thru and the photographer happens to get some topless photos of him, I wouldn't be opposed to you showing off his muscles. LOL! Sorry, but he is very easy on the eyes. Like you are!!

    ReplyDelete
  79. i like the plaid shirt better as a shirt - but i think the blue striped will focus the attention on the two of you as opposed to the pattern of the plaid and how well it matches the gold. i think the stropes provies a good contrast without being to distracting .

that being said - just make him change halfway through because neither of them will be bad :)

    ReplyDelete
  80. At first, I thought plaid...but I'm gonna vote for the stripes. I love the silver&gold concept. :)

    ReplyDelete
  81. Plaid! It looks like it fits better

    ReplyDelete
  82. Ooooo i love them both! Probably stripes though

    ReplyDelete
  83. I say striped. The reason being the plaid looks to Christmasy/Wintery...and your dress is more springy. Lol hope that makes sense.

    ReplyDelete
  84. S|T|R|I|P|E|S

can't wait to see the pics of you two!!
    have a great weekend!

    ReplyDelete
  85. Plaid! It struck me immediately when I saw the picture.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Plaid, plaid, plaid!!!! (I voted plaid on instagram as well)

    ReplyDelete
  87. stripes says: "i like to get dressed up and take my lady out on the town for a nice fancy meal in her golden dress".

plaid says: "i'm a country beefcake with a rustic charm, a collection of deer heads, and a beautiful golden goddess by my side".

so, depends on the overall feel of your photoshoot, really! haha. personally, I'm a plaid kinda gal ;)

    Plaid plaid plaid!

  89. I am a plaid kind of gal! Plus who doesn't love a good looking guy in plaid - ha! so my vote is plaid! Can't wait to see the picts! But you are right you could have him change mid way just to see. :)

    ReplyDelete
  90. plaid, plaid, PLAAAAAAID! Men wear plaid, girls wear dresses. Call me antiquated if you must, but the plaid is such a DUH. Stripes look busy on film, especially given the crinkly, textured appearance of the dress.

Plaid says something so warm and loving. Stripes say business.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Plaid - it photographs oh-so-well + that dress is lovely!!

  92. Stripes! Seems more appropriate for the upcoming spring. Plaid reminds me of fall. Good luck! :)

    ReplyDelete
  93. And in the left corner...joining the great debate...is ME!

Stripes. IMO, it's a softer blend with the mustardy dress. Plaid is a little too much contrast. And I agree with Ashlee above, stripes will be more Springy.

Can't wait to see those pics! You're going to look beautiful, I just know it.

  94. I love a guy in plaid....Love the dress too though!

  97. I really like how the plaid compliments the dress! That is a lovely dress-I love mustard/gold/yellow colors!

    ReplyDelete
  98. I vote stripes! I'll always vote stripes, though, so.....the plaid is great too!

    XOXO, Lindsey

  99. I love a man in plaid but I have to vote stripes for this one because I think the pattern goes with the fabric of the dress! :)

    ReplyDelete
  100. Just clicked on over from explore.dream.discover. Tough call, but I say stripes for a dressier look and plaid for more of a fun, casual look. Love both options and the dress too!

    ReplyDelete
  101. LOL I'm just as indecisive as you are! Initially I was going to say the stripes, but on closer inspection...plaid. :)

    ReplyDelete
  102. Change half way through OR plaid. Y'all are going to look so cute!!

    ReplyDelete
  103. PLAID!!! PLAID!! I am a Texas girl and I def say PLAID all the way!!!

    ReplyDelete
  104. I think there just will have to be a costume change half way through--then you get two totally different looks! You guys are going to have lots of good looking photos!

    ReplyDelete
  105. I think if the setting is natural, I would pick something with more contrast/pop, like the plaid. Normally, I adore stripes. But I think those stripes aren't contrasted enough to really stand out in a natural setting. And that, my friend, is my two cents. I'm sure the photos will be magical either way if it's split down the middle! :)

    ReplyDelete
  106. normally- i would say plaid. plaid plaid. i'm all about it.

BUT I think the stripes go WAY better. I know i'm a little late on this- but i had to put my two cents in!!! Haha

    ReplyDelete
  107. stripes! that one seems a little more fancy and goes more with your dress. :)

    ReplyDelete
  108. Stripes! That dress is beautiful!!
